Set Up A Teacher iBook Image.

  1. Start with an "up-to-date" generic iBook image for 10.4.11.
    1. You can do this either using the hard disk of a Mac or by using a partition on an external drive.
    2. Try to start from an official Mac install disk. If not then use a generic image that you TRUST.
    3. Make sure that you do ALL of the Apple system updates and application updates.
    4. Add a local Admin account (CGHS Admin). Allow this user to administer the computer.
    5. Add a teacher account (Teacher).
      1. Allow this user to administer the computer.
      2. Set up AutoLogIn for this account.
    6. Student Account (Optional).
      1. You may want to add a student account (Student) either on the image or individually.
      2. This account would allow students to use the computer (perhaps at a competition or on a field trip) without being able to access the teacher's account.
      3. DO NOT ALLOW Student to administer the computer.
      4. If the teacher chooses to allow student use, remember the following:
        1. the teacher password must be a real, hard to guess password (NOT "teacher").
        2. DO NOT enable autologin for any account!!
        3. The student password should also be a good password (not "student") and changed occasionally.
        4. Consider enabling "Fast User Switching".
        5. BE CAUTIOUS. iBooks do not use disk or user encryption, so students COULD use target mode to access your files.
    7. OS9 Issues.
      1. If you need OS9, put the OS9 System Folder and OS9 applications folders at the root level of the boot disk.
      2. "Bless" the OS9 System folder.
      3. Rebuild the OS9 Desktop.
      4. Check that everything works.
    8. Make sure needed pictures are in /Library/Desktop Pictures/ and set as account backgrounds or user images.

    9. DELETE UNWANTED ACCOUNTS (/Users) - Especially if you have ever used Active Directory.
    10. DELETE GARBAGE FROM EACH FOLDER OF EACH OF THE DESIRED ACCOUNTS
      1. Desktop
      2. Documents
      3. Library
      4. Movies
      5. Music
      6. Pictures
      7. Public
      8. Sites
    11. DELETE GARBAGE FROM THE SHARED ACCOUNT (/Users/Shared)
    12. EMPTY THE TRASH!!
    13. REPAIR PERMISSIONS !! Use "Disk Utility" ( /Applications/Utilities ).

  2. Install LANDesk.
    LANDesk is required by Broward Schools. You can find the installer at:
    http://browardlandesk.broward.k12.fl.us
    Use the North Area Client for Coral Glades HS.
    No configuration is needed.


  3. System Preferences.
    1. Sharing.
      1. Services tab.
        1. Computer Name. "3861-TL-".
          The rest will be filled in for each individual computer.
        2. Check "Apple Remote Desktop".
        3. Make sure "Remote Desktop Control" shows as "On". (The button should say "Stop".)
        4. Click the "Access Privileges" button.
          1. Turn on for all users (CGHS Admin, Teacher, Student)
          2. Under "Allow user to do..." check everything except "Show when being observed" under Observe.
          3. Leave other boxes unchecked.
          4. Under Info 1: enter "iBook 12in OSX 10.4.11"
          5. Leave everything else blank.
          6. Click "OK".
        5. Do not check anything else.
      2. Firewall tab.
        1. On the left of the pane it should say "Firewall On".
        2. Under "Allow" the following should be checked.
          1. LANDesk Remote Control
          2. LANDesk CBA8
          3. LANDesk Targeted Multicast
          4. Apple Remote Desktop
          5. Network Time
      3. Internet tab.
        Internet sharing should be off, and nothing selected.
    2. Network.
      1. Location: Automatic.
        1. Show: AirPort.
          1. AirPort tab.
            1. By Default, join Preferred networks.
              Set up "SBBC" network with "WEP" security and proper password.
            2. Show AirPort status in menu bar.
              Options:
              1. If no preferred networks are found:
                Ask before joining an open network.
              2. Do not click anything else.
          2. TCP/IP Tab
            1. Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
            2. DNS Servers: leave blank.
            3. Search Domains:
              • .local
              • browardschools.local
              • broward.k12.fl.us
            4. Do not configure IPv6.
          3. PPPoe Tab: Disabled. Everything blank and unchecked.
          4. Apple Talk Tab: Disabled. Everything blank and unchecked.
          5. Proxies Tab.
            1. Configure Proxies: Manually.
            2. All Proxy Servers: tssproxy.broward.k12.fl.us port 8888
              Old proxy was cglproxy.broward.k12.fl.us
            3. Leave "Proxy server requires password" unchecked.
            4. Select a proxy Server to configure. Use proxy above. Check the following:
              • FTP Proxy
              • Web Proxy (HTTP)
              • Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)
              • Streaming Proxy (RTSP)
            5. Do NOT select "Exclude simple hostnames".
            6. Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:
              • web
              • cglweb
              • broward.k12.fl.us
              • browardschools.local
            7. Check: "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV).
        2. Show: Built-in Ethernet
          1. TCP/IP Tab
            1. Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
            2. DNS Servers: leave blank.
            3. Search Domains:
              • .local
              • browardschools.local
              • broward.k12.fl.us
            4. Do not configure IPv6.
          2. PPPoE Tab: Not Active. Everything blank and unchecked.

        Leave everything as default. The teacher will set this up if (s)he wants a network connection at home.
    3. Energy Saver.
      1. Power Adapter: Normal.
      2. Battery: Normal.
    4. Bluetooth
      1. Settings Tab
        1. Uncheck all options
        2. If Bluetooth Power is "On", click "Turn Bluetooth Off".
      2. Devices Tab Make sure no Bluetooth devices are shown.
      3. Sharing Tab Make sure Bluetooth File Transfer is Off.
    5. Dock (Must be set up for each user account.)
      1. Dock Size: Close to "Small".
      2. Magnification: Check the box and set to Max.
      3. Position on screen: Bottom.
      4. Minimize using Genie Effect.
      5. Check "Animate opening applications".
      6. Check "Automatically hide and show the Dock".

  4. Install and/or Configure Applications
    Configuration must be done for each account.
    1. (Finder)
      Under "Advanced" tab choose "Show all file extensions".
    2. Microsoft Office 2008
      Use default settings.
    3. FirstClass (CAB)
      1. Under the "Advanced" tab set server to "cab.browardschools.com".
      2. Press the "Save" button and keep starting and quitting CAB until the login screen appears on the desktop.
