  Suddenly there she was, and me with her,
Betty ! Alive again ! And both of us kids.
On swings,
Her on my left, dressed in white.

Swinging higher and higher,
Then jumping off and running beneath the trees.
Just the two of us,
Laughing and playing in God's garden.

But then I woke to the darkness,
And the dreary noises of a fallen world.
And all at once,
The swings seemed far away.

I married Betty June Pair in 1972. Together we had 2 children. She died 3 months after our 10th anniversary in July of 1982 at 40 years of age. This poem was inspired by a dream I had about her some months later.

The title is a reference to a passage in the Christian part of the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:12:

For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face:
now I know in part;
but then shall I know even as also I am known.

It is very discouraging to see one's own poetry reproduced somewhere and labeled as "Author Unknown". That is what happens eventually when people copy poems and redistribute them. Eventually the attribution to the author and the copyright notice is lost.

My only reward for writing this is the 15 milliseconds of fame I receive from having my name here. Don't deprive me of that.
