This occurrs on a Windows XP PC which is set up with a Workgroup, rather than an AD UID/PW pair, when the user tries to connect to an AD share.

The symptom is that when the user enters the share on the "run" line the computer responds that permission is denied without ever requesting a password. Further checking shows that the commputer is set up properly.

The problem is that someone has tried to log in to the share with an incorrect UID/PW pair and has also checked the "save this password" box. Now the PC tries to use that defective UID/PW pair without giving a chance to try a different combination.

The cure is to delete the defective UID/PW pair. To do this:

  1. Log on to the workgroup account having the problem.

  2. Press the "Start" bar.

  3. Type "control keymgr.dll"

  4. Press "OK".

  5. Follow the directions in the resulting GUI to remove the offending key pair.

  6. You should now be asked for a UID/PW pair when attempting to connect to the share.
